A day after a survey pointed out that corruption in Delhi Police was high, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and reiterated his demand for control over the police and anti-corruption branch. He asked the PM to “stop being stubborn” and vowed to “set things right in one year” if the Aam Aadmi Party-led Delhi government gets control over the two key departments.
In a series of tweets, Mr Kejriwal pilloried Mr Modi’s “capabilities and intentions” and blamed the Centre and Lieutenant-Governor for corruption and ‘lawlessness’ in the city.
“Shocking findings CMS survey 2day—Del police (under Modiji n his LG) most corrupt— scathing attack on Modiji’s capabilities n intentions [sic]”; “Second finding— corruption has come down in delhi govt —it proves AAP govt’s neeyat n admn capability [sic]”; “Modi ji stop being stubborn, work with us. Hand over ACB and police to Delhi Government. We will deliver in a year [sic]”, the CM tweeted on Tuesday morning.
Quick to take credit for bringing down corruption, Mr Kejriwal said that even the survey findings support his claim. The survey, conducted by the Centre for Media Studies (CMS), India Corruption Study 2015, shows 45 per cent of residents surveyed found reduction in corruption across departments of Delhi government as compared to those of central government.
However, ever since voted to power, Mr Kejriwal has been demanding full-statehood and control over the police, which currently reports to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
