A 22-year-old MBBS student at All-India Institute of Medical Sciences here was found hanging from the ceiling fan of his hostel room on Sunday. He had failed in the first year exam and was depressed, the police said.
Anil Kumar Meena, who hailed from a village in Baran district of Rajasthan, kept himself locked in his room throughout the day on Saturday and was found hanging in the morning when some of his friends peeped inside his room from a ventilator above the door. No suicide note was found.
“Anil was a 2010 batch student had failed in all three subjects in the first year. His attendance was also short. He was depressed,” said a senior police officer. His father Suraj Mal Meena is a farmer. He was the eldest among four brothers.
Following the incident, under-graduate students gathered outside the residence of AIIMS director in the evening demanding his resignation and blaming the indifferent attitude of the administration for the tragedy.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, one of Anil's batch-mate said: “Anil was a brilliant and hardworking student. He had made it to the AIIMS studying at a Hindi medium government school in his village. He faced difficulty in following lectures in English at AIIMS and thus failed in all three papers in the annul exam. He cleared one of papers in the second attempt, but the weightage for internal exams in the final result was increased after declaration of the result and he again failed in all three papers.”
Holding the apathetic attitude of the administration responsible for the incident, another undergraduate student said: “In a similar case earlier, Balmukund Bharti, a final year student, had committed suicide in March 2010. Following it, a three-member committee was constituted to look into the problems of students and made certain recommendations. But the administration has failed to address the issues and the problem persists. Had the administration been a bit more sensitive, a young life would not have been lost.”
Meanwhile, the family of the deceased have been informed and they are expected to reach the Capital on Monday.
