A 23-year-old Afghan man was arrested for allegedly raping a woman in Malviya Nagar in South Delhi on Tuesday. The man was, however, released late in the evening after the victim withdrew her complaint. According to the police, they had detained the Afghan man on Tuesday morning after a 22-year-old woman accused him of raping her at his house at Hauz Rani in South Delhi. “The woman had made a call to the Police Control Room around 3-15 a.m. on Tuesday stating that her friend was “raped by her boyfriend” and thrown onto the street. Both the women were then taken to the Malviya Nagar police station to officially lodge a complaint,” said a police officer.

“The women were in an inebriated state and refused to cooperate with us. When we asked if she was willing to go for a medical examination, the woman refused. They also went back and forth on their statements,” the officer added. The officer said that it took a couple of hours before the duo could finally regain their senses and record an official statement. The accused Afghan youth, who works as a waiter at a restaurant in Hauz Rani, was taken into police custody.

However, following backtracking of the complainant, the police let him off.

“The woman gave a statement in the court stating that she was not raped. We had to release the accused from our custody,” said a senior police officer, adding that the court had not taken any action against any of the women.
