Advocate attacks wife, daughters before ending life

‘Financial crisis’ reason behind the drastic step

A 45-year-old advocate allegedly committed suicide by slitting his throat after attacking his wife and two minor daughters at their residence in south Delhi’s Sangam Vihar on Friday evening. Prima facie, the reason behind the step was financial crisis faced by the family

Jitender Bahadur Singh, native of Jharkhand, his wife Meenakshi and two daughters aged 10 and 11 were found lying unconscious in their bedroom around 8 p.m. when the police broke open their door.

The family’s neighbour Kuldeep Singh said that his children played Holi with Jitender’s daughters in the morning till afternoon and then had lunch in their respective houses around 3 p.m. It was because of Mr. Kuldeep’s two-year-old son that they got to know that something was amiss.

“My son used to stay in their house a lot. They all used to love him a lot. Around 7 p.m., when my son went and knocked on their door, no one opened which was unusual. He came back crying and told us that they weren’t opening the door. We went to check and tried to reach out to them for at least an hour,” he said. A lot of neighbours had gathered till then and a PCR call was made.

The police is said to have reached within 10 minutes and they broke open the two doors — wooden and iron — to enter the house. “When the teams entered, they saw Meenakshi and the daughters lying on the bed in a pool of blood and Jitender on the floor,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Romil Baaniya.

The four of them were then rushed to Batra Hospital where Jitender succumbed to injuries; his wife and daughters are admitted. A senior police officer investigating the case said that Ms Meenakshi condition is serious, though out of danger, and the daughters have been shifted to the ward. “The wife’s food pipe has been damaged. All of them were attacked with a knife and have injury marks on their necks. Jitender’s cut was very deep,” he said.

Daughter’s statement

The police said that the Jitender’s elder daughter gave her statement to the police while under treatment and told investigators that her father had attacked them. “Papa ne room lock kiya and humain chaaku se mara [Our father locked the room and then attacked us with a knife],” she allegedly said. Mr. Baaniya said that further details of the incident could not be asked as the girl was still under treatment.

Investigators said that Jitender was living in this accommodation for the last five months and wasn’t able to pay the rent. “He was an advocate and his practise wasn’t going well. He couldn’t pay the rent and his landlord was asking for it. This is suspected to be the reason so far,” said an investigator.

Neighbours shocked

The neighbours said that they’re shocked as the four of them “appeared to be” a happy family without any problems; the daughters used to go to a private school and their behaviour with everyone was “very good”.

The police said that Jitender’s family has been informed and they were on their way to Delhi. They will be interrogated for further details in case there was any other reason to take such a step.
