AAP orders magisterial probe

February 14, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 12:46 pm IST - New Delhi:

Even as politics over it continued to simmer, the AAP government on Saturday ordered a magisterial inquiry into police intervention in the goings-on at JNU here.

According to senior officials, the decision was taken following a request by Left leaders including Sitaram Yechury and D. Raja, and K.C. Tyagi of the JD(U), during their meeting with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday.

“Alleging that the BJP-led Centre was presiding over a campaign aimed at saffronisation of academic campuses across the country at the behest of the RSS, the leaders told the Chief Minister that they had immense hope in him and were sure that he would take the necessary steps for the deliverance of justice,” added an official.

“They also requested Mr. Kejriwal to give his nod for an independent inquiry into the matter and urged him to get verified the evidence gathered by the Delhi Police related and submitted to the case in court.”

Later in the day, Mr. Kejriwal ordered the District Magistrate to undertake an independent inquiry in the case.
