A delegation of Delhi BJP leaders met the Chief Election Commissioner on Monday to complain against what it alleged was an attempt by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to “divide the society on caste lines”.

The BJP also accused the AAP of making “objectionable comments” against the Election Commission and spreading “propaganda” about deletion of names from the voters’ list.

Led by Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari and Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Vijender Gupta, the delegation demanded “stern action” against the AAP, including revocation of its registration as a political party, stated a release issued by the BJP.

“We have submitted a complaint against the Aam Aadmi Party to the Election Commission on the issue of diving the people of Delhi along caste lines, spreading misinformation to the voters of Delhi about deletion of votes and alleging that the BJP has deleted your [Delhiites] votes and the Chief Minister of Delhi had added your votes to the list; and the objectionable comments against Election Commission by Arvind Kejriwal and his party leaders,” Mr. Tiwari said.

‘Maligning BJP’s image’

The party alleged that between December 4 and 6, “many statements” had been issued through Mr. Kejriwal’s official Twitter handle levelling allegations against the party with the “objective of maligning the image of the BJP”.

Mr. Tiwari also alleged that the AAP and its leaders held press conferences “many times” in which they made “objectionable comments” against the Election Commission, which shows the “real character of the party”.

“The Delhi BJP has demanded that the Election Commission take stern action against the conveners, leaders and office bearers of the party. It has also demanded that the AAP be de-recognised and its election symbol be seized so that these people may be stopped from endangering the unity and integrity of the country and vitiating the atmosphere of the society,” Mr. Tiwari said.

The North East Delhi MP further alleged that on the directions of Mr. Kejriwal, “false telephone calls” — and similar attempts on social media — are being made to voters to mislead citizens about the deletion of votes.

‘Will move court’

The BJP also intended to move the judiciary against the AAP in relation to the matter, said Mr. Tiwari, adding that the Chief Election Commissioner had assured the delegation of taking action “as soon as possible”.

“Besides the complaint [with the Election Commission], the Delhi BJP is going to move the court against the AAP... The Election Commission had earlier clarified that between 2015 and 2018, 13,73,300 names have been added to the voters’ list... baseless allegations against the BJP about deletion of votes show that the Aam Aadmi Party is fast losing its political base,” Mr. Tiwari said.
