Facing flak after a farmer, Gajender Singh, committed suicide during a rally organised by the Aam Aadmi Party over the land acquisition ordinance at Jantar Mantar here, the party leaders went on an offensive blaming the police for inaction.
Defending Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the senior party leadership for continuing the rally and not making efforts to prevent the suicide, party leader Ashutosh said: “Next time, I will ask Mr. Kejriwal to scale the tree and bring down any person doing anything similar.”
Before leaving the venue, Mr. Kejriwal accused the Delhi Police of inaction.
“We kept asking the police to bring him down. Police may not be in our control, but at least there should be a semblance of humanity among them. I am rushing to the hospital with Manish Sisodia,” he said.
“The media were doing their job. Party workers were doing theirs, but police didn’t do what they were supposed to do,” party leader Kumar Vishwas said at a press conference later.
The party leaders defended their decision of continuing the rally, saying that if the top leadership left the stage, a stampede would have ensued.
