The Delhi Jal Board under the Yamuna Action Plan – II has concluded a weeklong tree plantation drive in schools in South Delhi in association with The Energy Resources Institute (TERI), its partner non government organisation.
The drive that was held from February 15 to February 20 is a part of the “Aao Jamuna Mein Jaan Dalein” public outreach campaign being implemented by the Delhi Jal Board with the assistance of six NGOs. TERI is one of the six NGOs empanelled by the DJB for its YAP II programmes.
The drive will be carried out in 100 schools across South and South West Delhi. As part of this campaign, TERI would be distributing nearly 40 saplings to each school.
The drive aims at sensitising children towards the greening of Delhi and seeks to encourage them towards a greater participation in achieving this end.
Referring to the initiative, the chief executive officer of the DJB Ramesh Negi said: “We believe that through campaigns such as these, we will be able to induce a sense of responsibility amongst the students towards their city and its environment. Children are the best ambassadors to carry the message of a greener and healthier Delhi to their respective families and communities.”
According to a DJB official, 10 saplings each of medicinal, ornamental and forestry species will be distributed amongst the schools along with 10 kg of `vermipost’ manure.
“These activities are designed to spread awareness about the need to conserve the city’s precious and dwindling resources with a focus towards mobilising people towards a clean and pollution-free Yamuna. Activities such as these will help to mobilise young children who hold the key to spread the message of conservation and preservation of resources,” said a DJB official.
