Sub-Inspector D. M. Singh of the Meghalaya police from whose custody three Pakistan nationals escaped this past Friday has been suspended.
The sub-inspector was with the Indian Reserve Battalion team posted at the Lampur detention centre where the Pakistan nationals, Abdul Razzaq (61), Rafaquat Ali (55) and Mohammed Sadiq (55), had been kept pending deportation.
For its part, the Special Cell of the Delhi police is investigating to ascertain if there was any evidence indicating criminal negligence by the sub-inspector. “In case there is, we might arrest him,” said a police officer.
The police have found that only the sub-inspector accompanied the Pakistan national to the Guru Nanak Eye Centre for a check-up allegedly without informing anyone in the Special Branch. As per rules, he should inform the Inspector (Pakistan).
“He had taken the Pakistan nationals out of the Lampur centre on several earlier occasions,” said the police officer.
After the serious lapse, nearly 30 Central Reserve Police Force personnel, at the disposal of the Delhi police, have been deployed at the Lampur centre. “Apart from those who escaped, there are 17 other Pakistan nationals at the Lampur centre. Of them two have been living there for the past three years, the reason being that the host country (Pakistan) has not replied to their cases,” said another police officer.
The officer said several Pakistan nationals kept at the detention centre were arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and some were arrested in connection with their purported involvement in terror activities.
