The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has informed the Delhi Government that it would carry out cleanliness operations thrice a day during the Commonwealth Games in the city next year.
The civic body also stated that day-to-day collection of garbage in two MCD zones had been started and it would be extended to the remaining zones gradually. Besides, garbage would also be taken straight to the dumping sites and there would be no collection of garbage at “dhalaos”.
This information was provided by the MCD during a high-level meeting convened by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit for ensuring proper sanitation, street-lighting, street-scaping and cleanliness on all roads during the Commonwealth Games.
During the meeting, that was attended by three Ministers besides the Chief Secretary, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister, Delhi Mayor, MCD Commissioner and other senior officials of the three local bodies, the Chief Minister called upon the MCD, the New Delhi Municipal Council and Delhi Cantonment Board to work in tandem and ensure that their areas looked clean and green during the event.
Ms. Dikshit said the civic bodies should resurface, up-grade and strengthen their roads and ensure that they also have proper street lighting and street-scaping.
At the meeting, it was decided that the Chief Secretary would review the preparedness of local bodies on a regular basis, while the Chief Minister would look it up once a month.
The Chief Minister also demanded strict implementation of the Defacement of Property Act which is enforceable by the local bodies.
