Manipuri student kills himself in Delhi college hostel

A first-year Manipuri student of Hindu College here allegedly strangled himself to death with a mobile charger wire in his hostel room in the early hours of Sunday. Changtham Kripa Singh, 21, a student of B.A. Music (Honours), had been undergoing treatment for depression for over a year.

The incident came to light only around 5.30 p.m. when Kripa’s roommate Shirish (name changed), who had gone to a friend’s house, returned and found that the door was bolted from inside.

“When nobody answered despite repeated knocks, Shirish peeped through the ventilator and saw his roommate lying on the bed, with a wire coiled around the neck and blood around the body,” said a senior police officer.

Shirish immediately alerted the warden. Hostel authorities informed the police, who broke open the door and found Kripa’s body lying face down.

The ends of the mobile charger wire, which coiled around the neck, were wound around an iron pipe. Blood was oozing from his nostrils and mouth,” said the officer.

It is suspected that Kripa rotated the iron pipe after winding the loose ends of the wire around it. This led to the tightening of the noose around the neck, said the officer.

A suicide note was found near the body. In the two-page letter, Kripa did not blame anyone but used a number of “negative adjectives” about himself, said the officer.

Besides expressing his love for his dear ones, Kripa said he was disappointed with his life. The body was taken to the nearby Bara Hindu Rao Hospital for post mortem.

According to the police, Kripa had been under treatment for depression even before he came to Delhi last year.

The treatment continued and he regularly visited a psychiatrist here for counselling.

Kripa’s father, living in rented accommodation close to Delhi University over the last one month, said that in the recent past Kripa had told him that he was facing some problems in the hostel but “being an introvert, he never divulged their exact nature.”
