Lieutenant-Governor Anil Baijal on Saturday inspected a modern garbage collection station at New Friends Colony (NFC) and a landfill site at Okhla in south Delhi. He also directed the area’s civic body to expedite establishment of a waste-processing plant as a “showcase” project.
The L-G also inspected the Fixed Compactor Transfer Station (FCTS), which has replaced the earlier system of dhalao (dump) for solid waste management.
“For tackling the ever increasing problem of waste management in Delhi, the L-G directed SDMC Commissioner P. K. Goel to expedite establishment of waste processing facilities and assured that the DDA shall make land available for the purpose,” said a statement from the Raj Niwas.
Mr. Baijal also said that more such scientific projects for solid waste management were needed in Delhi.
According to Mr. Goel, the SDMC was contemplating setting up a waste-to-energy plant of 3,600 metric tonne per day capacity.
“The DDA shall allot 50 acres of land to SDMC. The L-G has directed that the plant should be a ‘showcase’ project of the country,” the SDMC said in a statement.
It added that a total of 15 FCTS have been installed or are being installed in SDMC’s Central Zone.
