Hike in withdrawal limit brings relief

Salaries begin to get credited to employee accounts; no repeat yet of payday chaos seen last month

January 03, 2017 01:02 am | Updated 01:02 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Delhiites seemed less hassled on the second payday since demonetisation was announced, as the cash withdrawal limit through ATMs was raised from ₹2,000 to ₹4,500 from January 1.

“The situation is for sure getting better now. ₹4,500 is enough to survive on for a week,” said Rahul Yadav, a resident of Ashok Nagar.

One trip

“The increase in withdrawal limit has smoothed things. Instead of standing in line twice a week, we now have to go to the ATM just once a week. The government should have done this from the first day itself,” said Rajesh Kumar, who was standing in an ATM line in Khan Market.

The state of affairs seem to be better than it was in December when many people were facing problems finding cash for even their day-to-day expense.

NCR residents unhappy

While the availability of cash seems to be getting better in the Capital, residents of the National Capital Region (NCR) are still struggling.

People from Ghaziabad, Noida and Gurugram were seen lining up at ATMs in Connaught Place and Metro stations. “I travel on the Metro daily as my office is in Saket. I have started leaving a bit early in order to withdraw cash from the Central Secretariat Metro station,” said Farhan, who resides in Ghaziabad.

“I have to come to Connaught Place to withdraw money as there is a severe shortage of cash in the NCR. The government should also concentrate on the NCR,” said Somesh Reddy, a resident of Gurugram.

Destination Delhi

“I have my vacations going on so whenever I come to Delhi to meet my friends, my father hands me two or three debit cards so that I can withdraw money. This has become a routine for me and my brother now because we are convinced that the NCR will never have enough cash,” said Akansha Shukla, a resident of Vaishali.

“People come from the NCR to withdraw cash because they do not have enough cash in their areas. This ATM generally does not have cash so very few people come here but majority of people who try this ATM are from the NCR,” said a guard of a Karnataka Bank branch who did not wish to be named.
