Delhi Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna on Tuesday directed the Delhi Police to be more vigilant with respect to safety of woman, including BPO staffers, who work during late hours.

Chairing a meeting with senior officer of the Delhi Police and representatives of 21 BPOs based in Delhi, Gurgaon and Noida at the Delhi Police headquarters, which took place in the backdrop of the abduction and gang rape of a call centre employee recently, Mr. Khanna said ever step should be taken to ensure the safety of women workers.

It was decided at the meeting that women employees should not be allowed to travel alone with cab drivers at night and a security guard must invariably accompany them. The cab drivers would also be under clear instructions not to pick up strangers on the way as they may commit carjacking or other crimes.

The police officials called for effective check and control of vehicles’ movement to check the unwarranted activities of cab drivers. The installation of global positioning system and issuance of radio frequency identification to cab drivers to effectively check the movement of the cabs was also suggested.

The officials said henceforth random checks and calling the cab drivers on mobile at regular intervals should be made mandatory to check their movement. During the meeting it was also suggested that the woman employees should be properly briefed about the precautions to be taken in the wake of any emergency.

The BPO representatives suggested that there should be high visibility of police and PCR vans on the highway at night. During the meeting it was also discussed that while driving on highway if any suspicious vehicle is noticed following the cab or an employee they should take the help of PCR by giving proper location.

The Delhi Police and BPO managements also agreed to identify certain prominent routes followed by the cabs for increasing police presence thereon.
