The process of corporatisation of the private bus service in the Capital began on Monday with the Delhi Cabinet approving the award of work to “cluster one” as part of the initiative to replace the Blueline buses on the roads.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, who chaired the meeting, said the Cabinet has decided to award the contract for operation of private stage carriage services for “cluster one” to M/s. Star Bus Services Private Limited that was the successful bidder for the cluster.

The Chief Minister said it has also been decided that the process of bidding would be extended to the other 16 clusters as well and corporate entities would replace the existing Blueline buses that are run by individual operators.

The Transport Department, she said, had also been authorised to issue request for qualification and request for proposal for the remaining 16 clusters.

The scheme of privatisation of bus clusters that has been approved by the Delhi Government involves replacement of existing Blueline by private operators. Ms. Dikshit expressed confidence that this will help in ensuring a reliable public transport system in Delhi.

She said the Cabinet also approved creation of 12 additional posts of headquarter inspectors in the Transport Department. This had become essential because of the reorganisation of the Transport Department on the pattern of the Delhi Police and Revenue Department.
