June 10, 2010 03:46 pm | Updated 03:46 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

The Environment Committee of the Delhi Assembly has decided to call the Municipal Corporation of Delhi Additional Commissioner and the Irrigation and Flood Control Department officials for a meeting to take stock of cleaning and maintenance of storm-water drains as part of the preparations for the upcoming monsoon.

During the committee first meeting on Tuesday, the issue of cleaning up of all big and small drains was taken up and it was decided that the officials concerned be called at the next meeting so that the ground reality could be known.

The meeting, which was chaired by Wazirpur MLA Harishankar Gupta, also discussed the issue of cleaning of the Yamuna.

It discussed the Rs.2,600-crore project given to Engineers India Limited for laying big sewer lines from open drains to the interceptors for treatment of sewage.

The committee also decided that all open land along roadsides and in other places should be covered with either grass or plants.

This, it said, would help in prevention of dust getting swept around during storms.
