A 51-year-old Dutch national was found dead under mysterious circumstances in a Youth Men's Christian Association hostel room here on Wednesday.

The incident came to light in the morning when the hostel staff noticed a foul smell emanating from Room No. 363 where Albert G. Jan Tenkink had been staying since June 11. The hostel authorities informed the police which entered the room and discovered Albert's decomposed body.

Enquiries by the police revealed that Albert had come to India on a tourist visa. He was last seen on Monday when he had his breakfast. He then locked himself up in the room after putting a “do-not-disturb” card on the door. The police found several medicines in the room. “We are trying to ascertain if he had any illness. We have informed the Embassy authorities,” said a police officer, adding that the exact cause of death would be established through post-mortem findings.
