Delhi Police is planning to rope in schools to sensitise students about the perils of driving by minors with the number of such cases doubling in past three years.
Last year, the number of minor drivers prosecuted had risen to 4,914 from 2008’s figure of 4,236. In 2007, the figure was 2,997.
According to a senior police official, a large number of students, especially from affluent sections of society, drive to school.
“We are planning to rope in schools to control driving by children. School authorities will be asked to ensure that students do not drive themselves to school. We have asked them to sensitise parents as well,” the official said.
“We will write to all school principals drawing their attention to the problem and requesting them to advise children about stringent action including challaning and seizure of vehicles,” the official said.
Last Wednesday, two teenaged students were killed in Ashok Vihar when the motorcycle in which they were travelling was hit by a DTC bus.
The official said last year also, they had launched a special drive outside schools and residential colonies to create an impact and dissuade minor driving.
