Section-wise deadlines have been set for completion of the elevated road project along the Barapulla drain and the Ring Road bypass by the Public Works Department.
The Barapulla drain project costing Rs.500 crore is expected to be completed in April. The elevated road would cross over four major roads and railway tracks and is being constructed using pre-cast segmental technology.
The project is in an advanced stage now and the launching of normal segments from Sarai Kale Khan towards the railway track has almost been completed and preparations are on for launching segments for cantilever span over Ring Road.
As per schedule, the launching of segments for all the normal spans and the crossing over Ring Road and Lala Lajpat Rai Marg are expected to be completed by March 31. Thereafter the construction agency, DSC Limited, has planned to complete the road over Mathura Road and the railway tracks by launching segments in cantilever form between April 30 and May 15. Then the two connections of the project with Lala Lajpat Rai Marg are scheduled to be completed by June 2010.
The Ring Road bypass from Salimgarh Fort to Velodrome Road is expected to become fully operational by June 2010.
The target date for completion of the North Velodrome area is March, beyond North Velodrome area to back of Rajghat Power Station is May, back of Rajghat Power Station to Geeta Colony Bridge -- including four loops and four slip roads -- is April, and Geeta Colony Bridge to Salimgarh Fort including Yamuna Bazar area is May.
About 57 per cent of the work on this 5.5 km project has already been completed. The project involves providing a signal free and smooth flow of traffic from Ring Road, dispersal of traffic from Geeta Colony bridge and solution for existing necking in Ring Road between Red Fort and Salimgarh Fort.
The completion of the project will decongest traffic on Ring Road near Samadhi areas as these are places of national importance and frequently visited by VVIPs.
The planning for this project was started in August 2006 and work on this Rs.654 crore bypass had started in December 2008.
On the southern side, the bypass would take off from Ring Road near IGI Stadium on elevated corridor along North Velodrome Road and go behind Rajghat Power House to further move at-grade along the old embankment of river Yamuna. It would thereafter cross beneath Geeta Colony Bridge and has connectivity in all directions with four loops and four slip-roads. The bypass would rejoin Ring Road near Red Fort.
For traffic going from north to south, the Ring Road bypass would take off from the Ring Road before Hanuman Setu and move through Yamuna Bazaar area and cross the railway track through an underpass that is being constructed by the Railways.
