Child falls to death from school building

January 25, 2012 11:32 am | Updated October 18, 2016 01:04 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

A Class VI student fell from the second floor of his school building under mysterious circumstances in Mayur Vihar Phase-I here on Tuesday and later succumbed to his injuries during treatment at a hospital in neighbouring Noida. His relatives alleged that the school authorities were trying to hush-up the case.

Twelve-year-old Varun Jain was a student of Rishabh Public School. The incident took place after school hours around 1-30 p.m. when the students were waiting in the lawn for their bus home. “One group had already left in the first bus. Varun and his cousin, who is in the primary school, were waiting for the next bus when he went back to the school building to collect a copy he had left in the classroom,” said Varun's cousin Mohit.

About half-an-hour later Varun's father received a call from the school stating that his son had fallen from the second floor of the school building and had been taken to the nearby Jeevan Anmol Hospital with serious injuries. “Doctors said he was serious and his chances of survival were slim. He had sustained severe head and neck injuries. They also conducted a CT scan, following which we rus-hed him to Kailash Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries around 5 p.m.,” he said.

Mohit said Varun breathed his last in his father Sanjay Jain's presence. “His mother saw him minutes before his death. However, we then took her away and have not yet told her about his death. She would not be able to bear it. She still thinks that her son is alive, fighting for his life. He was a good student, an obedient son and a nice, cheerful boy,” said Mohit, raising suspicion over his cousin's death.

“It is still not clear whether he fell from the second floor or someone pushed him down. A police team visited the school campus in the evening and are investigating the matter,” he alleged.

The police have registered a case of causing death due to negligence and are recording statements of the witnesses to reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to Varun's mysterious death. His body has been kept in a mortuary.

“The post-mortem will be conducted on Wednesday. Further action will be taken on the basis of the findings,” said a police officer.

Varun lived with his father, mother and an elder sister in Pandav Nagar. His father runs an electrical appliances shop in the area.
