The Ghaziabad police have lodged an FIR and launched a manhunt to nab the miscreants who set an app-based taxi driver's cab on fire in Indirapuram on Tuesday night.
Stopped on way home
The Maruti Ritz car belonging to one Jagdish Chandra, who hails from Chipiyana village in Greater Noida, was set on fire at Shakti Khand in Indirapuram, the Ghaziabad police said. An FIR has been lodged at the Indirapuram police station in this regard.
Speaking to The Hindu , Mr. Chandra said that he was returning home after dropping a passenger in Vaishali in Ghaziabad. “As I reached near Shakti Khand 4, unidentified persons signalled to stop the car. As I stopped my car, they abused me, pelted stones and damaged the car’s side mirror using lathis. They then poured some kind of inflammable chemical inside the car and set my car on fire before fleeing,” he said. He added that his car’s papers and a mobile phone was also destroyed in the incident.
Irked over ignoring strike
When asked about possible motives for setting his car on fire, Mr. Chandra said: “I do not have any personal enmity. The miscreants told me that there would be consequences for not endorsing the strike and plying cabs,” the victim added.
The incident comes even as cab drivers are divided over the strike against “low fares” and “lack of basic amenities” provided by app-based cab operators.
