Businessman killed in South Delhi dacoity

Five assailants were later captured by the police

A businessman was killed at his South Delhi farmhouse in a daring dacoity in the early hours of Thursday. The five dacoits were later captured after neighbours alerted the police.

The dacoits allegedly used chloroform to restrain the farmhouse security guard, the businessman Rohan Gupta and his elderly parents. Prima facie, the 38-year-old businessman appears to have been strangled, but police have not ruled out the possibility of death due to overdose of chloroform.

The arrested men, aged between 18 and 38 years, are natives of Muzaffarpur in Bihar , police said after initial interrogation. The police are also probing the role of other current and former employees of the victim in the incident.

Having separated from his wife, Gupta lived with his elderly parents, Rashmi and Kishan, at their farmhouse in the highly-secured and exclusive DLF Farms in Chhatarpur.

Gupta’s farmhouse is constructed on a plot of land that also houses two more bungalows, one of them owned by Nishi Sethi, sister of murdered businessman Ponty Chadha. The three bungalows are connected by a common path and an entrance that is guarded.

The five dacoits apparently jumped onto the common path by climbing the boundary wall around 12.30 am on Thursday. “I heard a loud thud. Within seconds, one man pointed a pistol to my chest while another opened his bag to bring out a bottle. He poured some liquid over a cloth and pressed it against my nose,” claimed the guard Bharat Singh.

The gang then climbed over the gates of Gupta’s farmhouse and ripped off the mesh of the kitchen window to gain access to the house. Gupta’s parents were thrashed and chloroform was used to sedate them before the dacoits headed to the first floor.

Used chloroform

Gupta tried to put up a fight, but he was knocked unconscious using a large dose of chloroform before one of them possibly strangulated him. The dacoits were nabbed as they were trying to escape.
