Baijal, Kejriwal laud each other

Chief Minister, new L-G drop hints of cordial relations in first public appearance together

January 11, 2017 01:54 am | Updated 01:54 am IST - New Delhi:

All seems to be well in the Capital’s corridors of power with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal publicly thanking the newly sworn-in L-G, Anil Baijal, for honouring his government’s request to be present at back to back inauguration programmes on Tuesday, and the latter complimenting the AAP government for undertaking the projects.

This is a pleasant shift from the past relations between the Chief Minister and the former Lieutenant-Governor, Najeeb Jung, who had been engaged in a bitter tussle for power in the Capital.

While the Chief Minister, who found an opponent in Mr. Baijal's predecessor Najeeb Jung on more than one occasion in the past, publicly thanked the newly sworn-in LG for honouring his government's request to be present at back to back inauguration programs on Tuesday, the latter complimented the AAP government for undertaking the projects in question.

Mutual admiration

Even as Mr. Kejriwal and Mr. Baijal made their first public appearance together on Tuesday, sources in the Delhi government termed the relationship so far “cordial and a working one”. Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, in fact, had commended the L-G for going out on a cleanliness inspection last Sunday.

Speaking at the inauguration of a skill-development centre in west Delhi’s Tilak Nagar, Mr. Baijal said, while Mr. Kejriwal on his part thanked the LG for inspiring the city administration to implement such public interest initiative by gracing the function. “Good to see that homeless people have not been only provided shelters here, but they are also being made employable so that they can earn their livelihood... This is a very good initiative and I welcome it.”

Skill development centres

Skill development centres have been set up at 10 night shelters where the homeless will be trained in skills ranging from basic sewing, beauty culture, plumbing, electrical work and a crash course in simple cooking.

“People who stay at night shelters are neither voters nor vote bank of any political party. In the past, no government had worked for them,” the L-G said. Mr. Kejriwal thanked Mr. Baijal for inspiring the government by coming to the event and expressed hope that in the coming days, “we would work for three-four folds development of Delhi”.
