A delegation of BJP legislators led by Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly V. K. Malhotra took out a demonstration from Shaheedi Park to Delhi Secretariat on Tuesday to protest against the increase in the prices of essential commodities.
Carrying placards and banners and wearing aprons, the protestors raised slogans against the “anti-people” policies of the Delhi Government during the protest. They were stopped and detained by the Delhi police midway through the protest and were taken to the Indraprastha Estate police station.
The MLAs who participated in the march included Jagdish Mukhi, Harsh Vardhan, H.S. Balli, Jai Bhagwan Aggarwal, Karan Singh Tanwar, Sahab Singh Chouhan, Ramesh Bidhuri, Mohan Singh Bisht, Shyam Lal Garg, Naresh Gaur, Sat Prakash Rana, S.P. Ratawal, Kulwant Rana, Sunil Vaidya, Anil Jha, Pradyman Rajput, O.P. Babbar, Subhash Sachdeva, Srikishan Tyagi and R.N. Bansal.
Following the march, Prof. Malhotra presented a memorandum to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit against the recent increase in the fares of DTC and Blueline buses, inflated electricity bills, rise in the prices of essential commodities and non-availability of ration to the poor at the fair price shops.
In the memorandum, the party legislators demanded that the decision to increase DTC fares and milk prices be rolled back immediately; power bills be corrected and subsidised power be provided to the poor; and the water charges and metro rail fares not be increased.
Further, the BJP has demanded that items of daily need such as rice, wheat, pulses, sugar and kerosene be made available at subsidised rates through government-owned ration shops, and food items and other essential commodities be immediately de-linked from the forward trading and their prices be controlled.
