The Aam Aadmi Party on Tuesday said that over 90% of the people the party surveyed supported the Delhi government’s plan to allow free ride for women in metro trains and government-run buses.

Addressing the media, AAP Delhi in-charge Gopal Rai said that the party had reached out to 71,592 people through 1,120 meetings and 64,972 respondents had supported the scheme.

“Between June 8 and 17, AAP MLAs, councillors, and women wing members met people across the city. In 10 days, 1,120 meetings were organised with people from a cross-section of society, including in slums, unauthorised colonies, housing societies, flats. Of the 71,592 people who were surveyed, 64,972 people said they supported the idea. A total of 90.8% of the people surveyed expressed their approval for the free travel for women in public transport proposed by the Delhi government,” Mr. Rai said.

CM to look at report

The AAP leader said that the report has been put together and will be submitted to the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the government will decide its next course of action based on the report.

Opposition protests

The Opposition has decried the move as “misleading” and a “poll plank” inspired by AAP’s defeat in the recent Lok Sabha election.

It also questioned why no such efforts had been made over the last four-and-a-half years of AAP government’s rule in the Capital.

On June 3, the Chief Minister had announced that the government is planning to make travel for women free in government buses and Metro trains.

A day after the announcement, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia had taken rides in buses for feedback and said that he spoke to about 50 people and not even one person said it was a bad idea.
