Over four months after the Car Free Day initiative was taken up in Gurgaon to promote public transport and non-motorised transport, the local administration has now decided to build a nearly 7.5 km-long cycle track to promote cycling in the city.

The proposed track will run from Dundahera to Mahavir Chowk and is expected to come up before the Happening Haryana Summit in the first week of March.

“We had put forward a proposal for a 27 km-long cycle track around IFFCO Chowk in a meeting with Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar this past month. Mr. Khattar ordered the officials to build a 7.5-km track in the first phase. Senior local administration officials, including Deputy Commissioner T.L. Satyaprakash, were also present during the meeting,” said Embarq India manager (cities and transport) Sarika Panda Bhatt.

The proposed 27-km track includes a 4.8-km stretch from HUDA City Centre metro station to Netaji Subhash Chowk, a 3-km stretch on Old-Delhi Gurgaon Road and a 2.2-km stretch on Golf Course Road.

This is, however, not for the first time that a proposal has been made for building cycle track. In 201 4, the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon had proposed to build a cycle track starting from HUDA City Centre to Golf Course Road via Galleria Market. The then MCG Commissioner Praveen Kumar also got a 4-km stretch painted and marked with cycle icons in order to provide that section to cyclists. The MCG had also planned to make a cycling track on Old Delhi-Gurgaon Road and Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road two years ago.

The proposed 7.5-km stretch will be built by the MCG.
