Shortage of teachers and their attitude towards students, lack of clean water and toilets have emerged as the main concerns of students at 720 government schools, a recent survey by the Delhi government’s Education Department has found.
The survey report comes after Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia had invited students in May to give in their suggestions on how to improveme the government schools in Delhi. The department had started a helpline, a Facebook page along with an app for students to interact with officials and the Minister.
According to the report, some students even complained that the teachers sometimes drink alcohol in duty hours.
Some even made a point that students should not be passed if they did not attend the school. Principal and teachers verbally abuse students and, on many occasions, their parents as well.
Students at one of the schools said that their economics teacher doesn’t know how to read and speak in English, and because of that a book, which has all the answers, is made compulsory for all the students.
Students have recommended improvement in sports facilities as well. In some schools, students continue to sit on the floor and need desks. Some schools had complained that teachers are busy in election duties and other government-related work. They themselves have requested to raise the height of the boundary walls as some boys bunk the school and shockingly, boys of the neighbourhood come inside the school and harass girls.
There are major security lapses within the schools and CCTVs were recommended in each school. With no computers, or just one, for all the students, computer education has been listed as the fourth problem/recommendation by them.
