Six persons have been arrested on Thursday for allegedly duping people from USA and Canada on the pretext of removing virus from their computers, the police said on Friday.
They received a tip-off about an illegal call centre and conducted a raid there. Following this, they nabbed the accused from B-19 in Sector 2. The accused have been identified as Prabhat Sinha, Atul Verma, Vijay Sharma, Deepak Tiwari, Suresh Tiwari and Jahajeb Pasa — all from Noida and Delhi. “Prabhat and Atul setup a call centre — Code Mevan — in B-19. They have been working as the company’s director for the past six months. The other two director — Vinod Nagori and Rohit Kothari — are on the run,” the police said.
SP (City) Sudha Singh said the accused sent messages to users saying their computers were not secured.
To get it disinfected, the users were asked to call on the given technical assistance’s number. “The accused then sent virus to a number of people in USA, Canada and other foreign countries. The users were asked to pay $99-$600 to unlock the computers. All the payments were made through gateway PayPal,” Mr. Singh said.
