Four staffers of a Dwarka shelter home have been arrested on Saturday for allegedly ill-treating minor girls, the police said.

The arrests were made a day after an FIR was registered.

A senior police officer said the four staffers — welfare officer, home in-charge and two house mothers — are aged between 20 and 30 years.

“The FIR was registered under Section 6 of POCSO Act and 75 of Juvenile Justice Act. The statements of two victims were recorded before the magistrate after which the arrests were made,” the officer said.

‘Sexually assaulted’

The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) had visited the home and found that the girls were allegedly sexually assaulted and punished.

Chilli powder was allegedly put in their private parts as punishment and they were also made to clean toilets and wash utensils. Following the arrests, DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal said: “I request the CWC to ensure new management of the home and protection for the girls. They need to be rehabilitated properly.”

“I also request the Centre to ensure inspection of all shelter homes across the country by officers at war footing. When abuse can be prevalent in a shelter home in Delhi, one can imagine what must be going on in the entire country,” she added.
