Three men were shot dead and another injured in outer Delhi’s Mianwali Nagar on Sunday night. Though no arrests have been made yet, the police have rounded up a few people for questioning.

The incident reportedly happened around 11 p.m. when Bhupinder alias Monu Sehrawat was drinking inside a car with his friends Arun Shetty and Yogesh, and Personal Security Officers Assistant Sub-Inspector Vijay Yadav and Constable Kuldeep at National Market.

The police said that the attackers, who are yet to be identified, came on two bikes and a car and opened fire at Monu and his friends. While Monu, Arun and ASI Vijay died on the spot, Kuldeep was injured and Yogesh escaped unhurt. Sources told The Hindu that at least 40 rounds were fired.

The police found 13 bullet marks on the car, which was soaked in blood on the inside.

Eyewitness account

A 15-year-old roadside vendor, who was out with his friends, said he saw some people shooting at the car. “I was with two friends. In fact, one of the bullets grazed past my friend. We ran and hid in one of the houses,” he said, adding that he couldn’t attend school on Monday as he was haunted by what he saw.

Monu’s family, meanwhile, has accused one Sonu Dariyapur of killing him. According to them, Sonu was unhappy with Monu’s marriage to his cousin Rajrani. “We know Sonu did this. He was against Monu and Rajrani’s union and had openly given them death threats,” said 61-year-old Phool Singh Sehrawat, Monu’s father.

Mr. Sehrawat added that Monu and Sonu were friends before the former married Rajrani. “He [Sonu] told Monu that he couldn’t become his brother-in-law as that would make Monu his senior as per the relationship,” he said.

The case has been transferred to the Special Cell. “A Special Cell team has been formed. We are sure of nabbing the culprit soon,” said DCP (Crime) Madhur Verma.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Mahendra Nath Tiwari, who was heading the investigation till Monday, said that though Sonu was the prime suspect, they were probing the case from all angles. “Monu had over six criminal cases against him. We have been told that one Sonu did not approve of his marriage, which makes him the prime suspect. But, we are probing all angles,” said Mr. Tiwari

A case has registered under sections 302 (punishment for murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 34 (criminal offence by several persons) of the IPC and sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act.
