The Forest Department has unearthed 2,841 logs of different sizes from the Delhi Golf Club after receiving a complaint in July about illegal cutting of trees, a report submitted to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) on Tuesday showed.
In the action-taken report, the Department said the inspection of the site was carried out on July 11 after a phone call complaining about the alleged illegal activity was received on July 10.
Violation
The inspection report submitted on July 16 said there had been felling of trees without permission, which is a violation of the Delhi Preservation of Trees Act, 1994.
Found buried
The Department then filed an FIR at the Nizamuddin police station and carried out digging of the logs, which were found to be buried under soil and dried leaves in a number of pits.
As on Tuesday, the process of digging up the logs was still on and 2,841 logs had been unearthed, the report to the CMO said.
The report added that the process of measuring and numbering the logs was being carried out in order to ascertain the “gravity of the offence”. Government sources said the trees could have been cut last year.
