Nearly 200 government schools in the Capital would get a new look and modern infrastructure over the next two years under the Roopantar project, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said on Monday after inaugurating a renovated building of Government Sarvodaya Co-Educational School at Old Seelampur in East Delhi.
Ms. Dikshit said the Education Department had assigned 198 school premises located in North-West, North-East and East Delhi to the Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation for refurbishment. The Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation(DSIIDC) had taken the initiative to upgrade the physical infrastructure of government schools in consultation with M/s. IL&FS under the Roopantar project. As part of the project, the schools would be provided with basic minimum acceptable standards of health, hygiene and safety.
Delhi Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely said the renovation work under the Roopantar scheme at the Old Seelampur school had been completed within the stipulated time at a cost of Rs.215 lakh. He further informed that the new building would have four floors comprising 11 rooms, two laboratories, six classrooms, one library, one Principal’s room and one hall with four toilet blocks on each floor. The premises would have provision of a rainwater harvesting system, underground water tank, septic tank, drinking water module and reverse osmosis water plant. The school building would also have ramps for children with special needs.
East Delhi MP Sandeep Dikshit said the Delhi Government had been providing quality education and implementing new projects for upgrading and improving delivery of education. He also lauded the efforts of the Education Department in opening on an average two new schools every month in Delhi over the past 10 years.
