2 steal ₹1.7 cr, held

Worked with cash replenishment firm

Two employees of a cash replenishment firm have been arrested after the company found that they had siphoned off ₹1.7 crore meant for refilling ATMs located in west and north-west Delhi, the police said on Friday.

DCP (West) Vijay Kumar said Satpal has been arrested, while Manish was nabbed in a case under the Arms Act earlier and will be taken on remand later. Senior officials of the logistics firm got a case registered at Rajouri Garden police station after an internal audit revealed financial discrepancies.

An inquiry revealed that Manish and Satpal were responsible for refilling 14 ATMs and took ₹1.8 crore from the vault on July 27. However, they only deposited ₹72 lakh in the ATM cash boxes and returned ₹9 lakh to the vault. They also kept the keys to the cash trunk.

When the company contacted Satpal the next day, he claimed he was in Agra visiting family.

Manish’s mobile phone was switched off and he failed to turn up for work. Manish’s elder brother called the company later and said he would not come to office for a few days. However, officials discovered that he had been arrested in Bindapur in connection with a case under the Arms Act.

The police found that the two accused had passwords of 14 ATMs and had not deposited around ₹1.2 crore in 10 of them. They also allegedly withdrew around ₹70 lakh from four other machines.
