Two men were shot dead by bike-borne assailants at a busy market of Rajender Nagar on Thursday morning. According to police sources, one of the victims was a witness in a court case going on in Haryana. The police suspect someone related to that case could be behind the incident.

The incident occurred around 9 a.m. when the victims, identified as Ram Charan (41) and Lakhan (52), both contractors, were having their morning tea at a shop at the Shankar Road market.

Two people on a bike came to the tea shop and the pillion rider opened fire at them. Both the victims received bullets on their chest as the attackers fired from a very close range. A PCR call was made by locals. “While Ram Charan died on the spot, Lakhan succumbed to injuries on the way to hospital,” a police officer said.

A woman, who sells flowers near the incident spot, said, “I was arranging my shop in the morning when I heard loud noise from the nearby tea shop and realised that it was the sound of firing. I did not see who fired at whom because I just ran towards the temple and hid myself inside. After two minutes, I heard people shouting arre goli mar di... koi police ko bulao. When I came out of the temple, I found two people lying in a pool of blood near the tea shop.”

“A case has been registered at the Rajender Nagar police station and investigation has been taken up. A police team has been sent to Haryana to find out about the court case and how the victims were related to it,” a senior police officer said.

Sources said Ram Charan was a witness in a court case and the person against whom the case was going on had asked him to settle for an out of court settlement, but he didn’t agree to it.

The tea shop owner has told the police that the victims were his regular customers. “The accused must have been following the victims and must be aware that they will go to the particular shop in the morning,” the officer added.

The police are also taking the help of the CCTV cameras to find clues about the assailants.
