More than seven years after tenders were floated for construction of three multi-level parking lots, two of those will finally be opened by December-end. These two facilities are going to come up at the Rohini West and Janakpuri West metro stations while the third one, being constructed at the Rajouri Garden station, shall be completed not before January-end.
According to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), the licensees of parking lots at Rohini West and Janakpuri West have applied for issue of completion certificates from the respective civic bodies. “Construction is over and the companies namely, M/S Unity Buildwell Ltd and M/S Aggarwal Plaza Pvt. Ltd. are awaiting completion certificates. Both the facilities will be open for public use by the end of this year,” said Anuj Dayal, executive director (corporate communication), DMRC.
However, the two other multi-level parking lots at the Rajouri Garden and Pitampura stations are yet to see the light of day. Work for both projects has been allotted to Spirit Global Constructions Ltd. and the company still has both of those listed in ‘project in pipeline’ instead of listing in its ‘under construction’ category.
In total, the DMRC will have five multi-level parking lots, including the operational facility above the underground New Delhi airport metro station.
The facility at Rohini West will have space for 600 cars, while Janakpuri West will accommodate around 1,000 cars. The one in Rajouri Garden will have a capacity of 550 cars whereas the lot in Pitampura will have space for 445 cars.
The present parking lots at the four locations are fully crowded and all of them are located close to important commercial hubs such as the Janakpuri District Centre.
The Rohini West location has over 100 housing colonies near it and the retail sector is also catching up in the area.
Similarly, Rajouri Garden is home to many shopping malls which are located around the station, whereas Pitampura has a lot of commercial activities in the neighbourhood. All the stations have around 16,000 to 20,000 daily commuters.
