A 17-year-old student of a government school was allegedly beaten to death by a group of boys on Wednesday afternoon in north-east Delhi’s Jyoti Nagar. Two minors have been apprehended, the police said on Thursday.
Gaurav, a Class XI student, was beaten in a park in front of his school around 4 p.m. The police said the murder was an outcome of a previous scuffle, the reason for which was unclear till Thursday evening.
Narrating the incident, the victim’s family said the boy had gone to his school — Government Boys Senior Secondary School — to get a transfer certificate as he had got admission in another government school at Shivaji Park.
“Gaurav, his mother Sumitra and his cousin Raj left around 3 p.m. to get the certificate. Around 4 p.m., he asked his mother to leave thinking she would get tired,” said Gaurav’s stepfather Razi Ahmed, who works at a shop in Gandhi Nagar.
After his mother left, a school official asked Gaurav to get a copy of his Aadhaar Card, which he was not carrying at that moment. Gaurav told his cousin that he was going home to get the document.
Waiting outside school
While Raj went to drink water, Gaurav left for home. “About 7-8 boys, including one in school uniform, were waiting outside the school. They dragged him to a park and beat him black and blue,” Ahmed said.
Witnessing the situation, a boy rushed to Raj and told him that Gaurav was being beaten up.
“Raj ran to the park and as soon as the boys saw him, they fled. All this happened within a span of five minutes,” the stepfather said. Raj also told the family that the boys had tried to strangulate and gag Gaurav.
The cousin informed the family and Gaurav was rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-East) Atul Thakur said a case under Section 302 (punishment for murder) has been registered.
“Following investigation, two juveniles were apprehended. One of them is a student at the school. The others have also been identified and teams are looking for the accused who are absconding,” he said.
