1.6 lakh students get bank accounts

After the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana got lakhs of people connected to the banking system, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation has now gone a step ahead and helped 1.6 lakh municipal primary school students in opening their bank accounts.

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation has 589 primary schools, where three lakh students study. SDMC Education Department Director C.U. Kumar said while 1.6 lakh children have been covered, the remaining 1.4 lakh students will also get their bank accounts in the next two months.

Mr. Kumar said ICICI Bank and Punjab & Sind Bank had partnered with the civic body to facilitate the opening of accounts.

Punjab & Sind Bank joined in after the Central Government launched its Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana that focuses on financial inclusion.
