A 12-year-old girl died after getting choked by the ropes of a swing in south-east Delhi’s Harkesh Nagar on Sunday, the police said on Monday.
The incident happened when Devanshi was playing on the swing on the first floor of their house and the ropes of the swing got entangled around her neck, the police said. The ropes were made out of a sari, they added.
Father not at home
The incident came to fore when her 4-year-old brother informed his mother about the incident.
She then rushed to the first floor and found her daughter lying motionless in the swing. She immediately contacted her husband, Sanjay Gaur, who was not home at the time.
“Sanjay rushed her to Holy Family Hospital where the doctors declared her brought dead. The hospital informed the police about the case. A police team reached the spot and initiated legal formalities,” said Chinmoy Biswal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-East).
The Class VII student, who lived with her family in C-block of Harkesh Nagar, Okhla, was studying at a civic school, the police said.
During the enquiry it was revealed that the victim was playing on the swing made of sari and her neck got entangled in it.
“The victim got entangled in the rope of the swing and died of asphyxiation,” said a police officer.
A crime investigation team visited the spot and took photographs, the officer said. The parents do not suspect any foul play in the incident, he added.
The body was handed over to them after post-mortem, the police said, adding that they have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).
‘Mother put up swing’
The locals said that the swing had been put up by the mother. It was removed immediately after the incident. Mr. Gaur is from eastern Uttar Pradesh and has been unemployed for a few months. He used to work as a labourer in a factory, the police said.
