1,100 SDMC buildings to have solar panels

Solar projects of 5MW capacity will be installed on top of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) buildings, the Standing Committee said on Thursday.

The panels will be installed on 1,100 buildings, an official said. These will include schools, community halls and parking lots.

The estimated cost of the project is ₹17.71 crore. It will take the total installed capacity of solar power with the SDMC up to 7.5 MW, the official said, adding the project is expected to be completed by August 15.

The panels will be installed on net metering basis, which means that excess electricity generated will be sent back to the grid and the consumer will be charged for the difference between electricity consumed and electricity sent back.

SDMC Commissioner Puneet Goel said current rules allow the use of electricity generated only in the same area otherwise it could have been used to run street lights.

He also said that current installed solar capacity of 2.5 MW in the corporation’s schools has reduced their electricity bills to zero. The project is being undertaken in partnership with the Solar Energy Corporation of India, a company run by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
