Three members of the RSS student wing, Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarti Parishad (ABVP), have resigned from their positions in the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) unit of the party, citing ideological differences.
Saying that the way the Central government has been tackling the issue of Kanhaiya Kumar is unjustifiable, Pradeep, Joint Secretary, ABVP JNU unit, Rahul Yadav, President, School of Social Sciences (SSS) ABVP unit and Ankit Hans, Secretary, SSS ABVP unit, have resigned from the party on Wednesday.
In a letter jointly issued by the three students, they have “dissociated themselves” from any further activity of ABVP. The letter adds that they cannot be the “mouthpiece” of a government that has unleashed oppression on student community.
They also add that they had long-standing difference with the party’s ideology over the Rohith Vemula issue as well.
“We can’t be mouthpiece of such a government which has unleashed oppression on student community. Government which has legitimised the action of right wing fascist forces either in Patiala House court or in front of JNU North Gate,” the letter reads.
“Every day we see people assemble at front gate with Indian Flag to beat JNU students, well this is hooliganism not nationalism, you can’t do anything in the name of nation, there is a difference between nationalism and hooliganism,” it adds.
Alleging that members of DSU were the ones shouting anti-nationals slogans, the letter adds: “Anti-India slogans can’t be tolerated on campus or any part of country. JNUSU and some left organisation are saying that nothing has happened in the campus but here we want to stress that veiled persons in the event organised by former DSU persons shouted slogans like “ bharat ke tukde honge”, of which there is concrete evidence in the video,” said Pradeep, one of the three students who have resigned. “We demand that any person responsible for the slogans should be punished as per the law,” he added.
The students further sent out an appeal to the student community to come out in support of the university beyond party lines.
“Today we all must stand together to save JNU which has given us identity, we need to come across party lines to save reputation of this institution,” the letter added.
Members of the BJP-backed ABVP have been protesting outside the gates of JNU for the last three-four days calling the students of JNU as “anti-national” and demanding their arrest. Members of Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU), which is dominated by ABVP had on Wednesday staged a protest outside JNU.
