The Department of Employment and Training has urged youth to register for the World Skill Competition to be held in China in 2021.

A. Latha, regional joint director (employment), told The Hindu that candidates born after 1.1.1999 can register for the contest to be held in 47 trades.

The global contest is for 56 trades. India will send candidates for 47 of these. The National Skill Development Council opened registration for the competition last month and candidates can enrol till November 25.

The district-level competition will be held here in January.

Two candidates selected for each trade will take part in the State-level competition.

“Enrolling for the competition is easy and there is no minimum education qualification. The candidates should just provide an e-mail ID,” she said.

The Department is taking efforts to create awareness about the competition among rural youth too. The national-level contest will be held in August next year.

As many as 33 of the trades are related to engineering and the rest are general.

About 300 factors, including use of safety gadgets and disposal of waste while working, will be taken into account to assess a candidate.

Officials from the Tamil Nadu government visited the competition held in Russia this year and want to encourage more youth from the State to take part in it, she added.

The National Skill Development Council has plans to support and train those who will be selected for the global competition.
