The works on the two-tier bus stand on the premises of the old bus stand here have been progressing according to schedule, said R.Sadheesh, Corporation Commissioner, on Monday.

Mr. Sadheesh along with City Chief Engineer A.Ashokan and other officials inspected the works.

The earlier structure was demolished for construction of the two-tier bus stand under the Smart Cities Mission at ₹ 92.13 crore. To avoid inconvenience to the public during the construction period, a temporary bus stand was set up at Bose Maidan, adjacent to the old bus stand at a cost of ₹3.9 crore.

Mr. Sadheesh said, “the works are progressing as per schedule and will be completed and brought to public use by December 2020. The bus stand will have 159 shop spaces and 52 bus bays. At present, 2,500 buses use the bus stand a day. Even if the number goes up, provisions have been made for 3,000-3,200 buses.”

Mr. Sadheesh also said that parking facilities for 1,500 two-wheelers had also been provided at the basement of the new bus stand.

A release from the Corporation said that there would be five levels - basement, ground, first, second and roof top - at the newly constructed bus stand.

Provisions had also been given for shops and office spaces across floors, the release added.
