The Erode Corporation has begun works to develop 30 green spaces at residential areas at a total cost of ₹24.93 crore.
The Special Grade municipality was upgraded as Corporation in January 1, 2008 and has a population of about five lakh. Absence of parks and recreational facility continues to be a major concern for the residents, who were demanding parks in the city.
The city has an open space of 1.42 sq.mt per person against the norms of 10 to 12 sq.mt per person. Hence, proposals were made under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme for achieving 0.98 sq.met per person. Though there are 106 parks available in the city, only 21 are being maintained for public use while others were in deplorable condition.
Hence to address the concern of the residents, the Corporation proposed to create recreational space for the people under the Smart City Mission.
It has proposed to create 30 parks with a total area of 1.94 lakh sq met at a total cost of ₹24.93 crore at Co-operative Colony and Telephone Nagar in Ward 1, Arul Velavan Nagar in Ward 5, MGR Nagar in Ward 14, VOC Park, VGB Garden, Balaji Nagar, Arjuna Nagar in Ward 17, Kamadhenu Nagar, Bharathiyar Nagar in Ward 18, Telephone Nagar in Ward 21, Sampath Nagar (two numbers) in Ward 22, Municipal Colony in Ward 25, Jai Krishna Garden, Maruthi Nagar, Villarasampatti Sun Garden Extension, Samudi Nagar, Senthamil Nagar in Ward 31, Lakshmi Garden in Ward 34, Cheran Nagar in Ward 36, Muthampalayam Phase 2 in Ward 37, and Periyar Nagar in Ward 44.
Also, green space would be developed at Deepam Nagar Layout, Kongu Nagar Layout, Thiruvalluvar Nagar in Ward 46, Theeran Chinnamalai Road in Ward 47, Vinayakar Kovil Street in Ward 49, Traffic Park at Ward 50 and Sendhur Garden at Ward 60.
Corporation officials said that expect for VOC Park, preliminary works have began in all the places and is expected to be completed on time.

They said that the green spaces will serve the children, senior citizens and women to spend their quality time at the parks where space for walking will also be available.
