The Dedicated Water Supply Scheme (DWSS) to supply 81.10 million litres per day (MLD) from Uratchikottai in Bhavani Town to the Erode City Municipal Corporation is in full swing as officials said that 41% of the works have been completed.

The ₹ 484.45 crore scheme is implemented by the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board and work order has been issued to Larson and Toubro, Chennai for executing the works.

Work began on July 3, 2017 and is scheduled to be completed by July, 2019. The scheme involves drawing water from River Cauvery at Varadanallur village near the Lower Mettur Barrage Power House – 4 at Uratchikottai and pumping the water into a water treatment plant with a capacity of 120 mld.

Later, the protected drinking water will be pumped to the tanks at Suriyampalayam and VOC Park from where it will be pumped to 21 new service reservoirs and 46 existing service reservoirs using feeder mains for a total of 7.68 km.

Using the existing 67.20 km pipelines and the proposed 731.82 km lines, water will be distributed to the residents in all the 60 wards.

Currently, construction of water treatment plant is in progress while of the 22 km feeder line from Uratchikottai to Erode, laying of pipelines for 5 km had been completed.

Work is on to lay pipelines in the residential areas. Officials said that about 41% of the work is completed and the scheme is on schedule. They added that all the works will be completed on time and trial run will begin from July next year. “Water supply to residents is possible from December, 2019”, they added.

Since most of the residential roads will be dug for laying pipelines, residents urge the corporation to re-lay the roads without delay.
