A woman from Saravanampatti in Coimbatore killed her three-month-old child allegedly after she was depressed over having given birth to a second daughter.

Kavyashree, daughter of Karthikeyan (29) and Vanitha (24) from Sivanandapuram near Sarvanampatti, was found dead in a pile of garbage near their house.

The woman informed her husband, an employee of a private company at Ramakrishnapuram, that her baby was missing. She told him that the baby was sleeping in the cradle when she had gone to wash clothes around 3 p.m., but the child was missing when she returned.

Karthikeyan rushed home from work and lodged a complaint with the Saravanampatti police.

The police questioned Vanitha after finding that her story did not add up. The woman finally admitted to the police that she killed the child, wrapped the body in old clothes and dumped it in a pile of garbage near her house.

The police recovered the body and found it was slit at the throat. The body was shifted to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for post-mortem.

The woman said to the police that she killed the child as she already had a daughter who was three-and-a-half-years old and lived with Vanitha’s mother in Dindigul.

The Saravanampatti police have taken Vanitha into custody. A case of murder is likely to be registered against her late on Monday. ends|wilson
