N. Panchavarnam (65) of Thambikottai in Thanjavur district reportedly ended her life by jumping from the third floor of a hospital in the city on Thursday morning.

Saravanampatty Inspector C. Rajkumar, who is investigating the case, said that the woman was among a group of twenty persons, who had been screened for cancer in a camp conducted in their village.

It is learnt that about four days ago, they were brought to the hospital here for surgery. The three other women from the village were discharged on Wednesday. The Inspector said that the woman was depressed over her health and the resultant delay in her discharge from the hospital. According to police sources, other patients (men) from the village, who underwent treatment in the hospital, saw Panchavarnam wandering in the hospital on Wednesday in a depressed state. On Thursday, she climbed the parapet wall and jumped from the third floor.
