The District Mahila Court on Wednesday asked a stepmother of two boys to pay compensation of Rs. 25,000 each for torturing them.

The public prosecutor of the court said that Ashok Kumar of Selvapuram North Housing Unit married Suguna and the two had two children Sridhar (9) and Sanjay (7). Following Suguna’s demise in 2011, Ashok Kumar married Rajeshwari alias Raji (26).

The woman harassed the boys and abused them using metal objects and also inflicted burn injuries on them. Suguna’s mother Shanthi who came to know about these lodged a complaint against Rajeshwari.Selvapuram Police arrested the woman and lodged her in jail, before she was granted bail. After the trials concluded, the judge M.P. Subramanian asked her to pay compensation of Rs. 25,000 each of the two boys immediately (on Wednesday) or to be imprisoned for six months.

Public Prosecutor R. Sarojini said that Rajeshwari made a request for time to pay the money as she did not have Rs. 50,000 in her hand, when the judgment was pronounced on Wednesday evening. Mr. Subramanian hence asked her to pay it before the court at 10 a.m. on Thursday.

The two boys are now with their grandmother Shanthi.
