With inflow continuing to be on the rise, water level is inching close to 100 feet at Bhavani Sagar Reservoir here on Saturday.

At 4 p.m., the inflow was 7,542 cusecs while the discharge was 1,300 cusecs in Lower Bhavani Project canal. The water level stood at 99.51 feet against the full reservoir level of 105 feet while the storage was 28.346 tmc against the capacity of 32.800 tmc.

Officials of the Public Works Department said that the water level had gone up by three feet in the past three days and added that further rain in catchment areas would help the water level go up in the coming days.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall in Gobichettipalayam and Sathyamangalam areas triggered heavy flow of water at Kodiveri anicut following which officials enforced a ban on bathing and coracle operations.

The officials said River Bhavani was carrying over 5,000 cusecs and hence the ban. Barricades were placed at the entrance and police warned of action if violations were found. Since there had been increase in turbidity level that led to change of water colour to muddy brown, turnout of people to the anicut was also very low on Saturday.

Also, the Sanjeevirayan Lake at Perumugai Panchayat in Gobichettipalayam received copious water due to rain and it started overflowing after six years. Officials issued flood alert to five villages in the area. The lake spread over 1,000 acre and located near forest area is receiving water in the past one week due to rain in the hilly areas.
