Until Monday, the well in the Tamil Evangelical Church compound in Kandal, near Ooty, had been a source of water for the residents. But now it had turned to be a source of trouble after the water was contaminated.
Pastor J. Raja complains that sewage along with blood and flesh from the nearby Udhagai Municipal Slaughter House contaminated the 12-foot water in the well. The issue came to light on Sunday morning when the sewage from the abattoir came gushing out near the entrance to the Church compound. “It was blood red and carried a bad odour.”
The Church members informed the Municipal authorities, but none turned up as it was a Sunday. On Monday, they came but did very little saying there was nothing wrong with the abattoir outlet. But they were forced to return on Tuesday after learning that the media was there and that the issue could go out of hand, Mr. Raja says.
As of Tuesday evening, the officials have said that a broken sewerage had led to the contamination, they had carried out the repair works and that there would be no more leakage of sewage from the slaughter house.
As for the contaminated water in the well, he said that municipal officials had promised to flush out the water and carry out the necessary cleaning measures.
A senior municipal official says that municipality will do its best to prevent contamination of well and initiate measure to clean it.
