The Nilgiris District Collector, Innocent Divya, inaugurated a 'Wall of Kindness' near the Ooty Bus Stand in Udhagamandalam on Monday.

The district administration has welcomed donations of clothes, blankets, shoes, books and other useful miscellaneous products, which will be kept stored in cupboards at the wall.

There have already been many local residents as well as private enterprises that have come forward to contribute items of clothing to be kept at the 'Wall of Kindness' said officials from the Nilgiris district administration. It is hoped that items such as blankets can be given to people in need especially with the winter months approaching.

Ms. Innocent Divya said that the first 'Wall of Kindness' in Tamil Nadu was set up in Tirunelveli, after which many cities got their own different versions of the global charity work phenomenon. “We hope that this wall would allow people to showcase their sympathy for their fellow residents in Udhagamandalam and would promote a sense of community among the people living here,” said the collector.

People looking to collect items they really require have been asked to visit the wall between 8 a.m in the morning and 6 p.m in the evening. The message that people should only take what they really require is also being promoted by the district administration. On Monday, after its inauguration, a few people were given some clothes and blankets from the wall by the district collector.
